ABOUT

The South Bay Math Contest was first started in 2006 by a group of dedicated Kumon instructors who wanted to give all their students a chance to experience competitive math in a more relaxed environment.  Over the years, the contest as grown to  over 800 participants from 8 local Kumon centers.

On the day of the South Bay Math Contest, students compete against other students in the same grade level by taking a timed test that includes grade level or above material.  The top performers all receive prizes and recognition.  All participants get participation gifts on the day of the test.  Check out some of the past participation gifts here.

The South Bay Math Contests gives students of all ages the chance to practice their test taking skills and gain some experience in competitive math.

Q:  What will be on the test?

A:  We can't tell you!  Students will be tested on their current grade level, as well as 1, 2, or 3 years above grade level work.  A variety of question types may be asked.

Q: How long does the test take?

A:  The time limit for the test depends on the student's grade level. All tests will be under an hour long.

Q:  What do we need to bring to the test?

A:  All participants should come prepared with their own pencils and erasers.

Q:  Can my preschooler join also?

A: Yes!  We have a Kindergarten and under category for younger students.  Students in this category will be supervised closely to make sure they are learning how to focus and the correct test taking skills.  It turns out to be a great learning experience for these students, and they all love getting a toy and gift after the contest is over!
